Greetings. Cloned my laptops HDD to a x25m drive using Intels migration utility. When I try to run the Intel SSD Optimizer tool, I get the following error message.

"Intel SSD Optimizer could not run due to the presence of Volume Shadow Copy Service data. Likely cause is a backup in progress. Please try again when the backup is finished"

VSS is running. System Restore is disabled. System has been rebooted, VSS has been halted/restarted. English version of OS. Any Ideas folks? Program will not run in safemode at all. (VSS is disabled in safe mode) Disabled AV software (Avast) and Spybot.

Tried the CCleaner.. neat tool, but it was not the solution. After digging through Event Viewer error messages, and learning about the vssadmin program, it would error out listing the current shadow copies. Long story short, the Intel SSD Optimizer requires not only the Volume Shadow Copy service to be running (which is the only thing it tells you you need) but also the MS Software Shadow Copy Provider. This can also be diagnosed by the dllinstall of swprv.dll failing. This was very fun to track down by the way.

Okay, one last problem to solve, and I'm done. Because this was a clone of a OEM drive, it had a hidden restore partition. It was copied over with the main partition during the cloning process. I have deleted it using diskpart. Now, my drive is unaligned, and I have 5gb of free unalocated space in the begining of the drive. Anyone know how I am add most of that space to the main partition, whist aligning the drive using the free space?

If it is XP, you would start out as unaligned and some people said it is better to leave it as that.

Also, I don't think you can extend a partition in XP(or can you, haven't used that for a long time).

So there is not much you can do.

Just wondering why equip such a piece of hardware with an ancient OS.

Its my wife's computer, I would have a very hard time convincing her to upgrade to a newer one, and she has only ever used XP. Not even sure if this laptop could run 7. I bought the SSD as a gift, without quite telling her how much it cost =) I do get an occasional freeze, where a program or the taskbar will hang for 10+ seconds.. heard that this could be attributed to the misalignment issue.

Tell her how much it costs and also that all advantages for that money can't be shown on XP, but only on Win 7. It is very easy Windows (I also used XP till summer last year when I got my new laptop)

finally got everything working.. using a 2nd pc, imaged the partition, wiped the ssd, partitioned it aligned, and moved the image back onto it. This should last another 4 years for her =)
