It is amazing how many times a simple computer exercise goes wrong (or perhaps it is me!).

I have just purchased a Startech 3.5" USB SATA HD Enclosure and a 500gb WD Caviar Green Desktop HD. The shop assured me the HD would work in a standad enclosure. However on setting it up and plugging it into a USB port I hit problems. My computer tells me it has installed the driver and my HD is ready for use. It shows up in Device Manager as working properly. The HD is not initialised and on going into the computer Management screen the HD shows up as Disc 3 and I am asked to initialise it. However on doing so a red warning 'Device not ready' comes up and that is it. The HD itself does nothing, no whirring, no lights flickering; it is as if the HD is not being accessed at all. I spoke with Startech who diagnosed a faulty enclosure. it has been replaced but the new one is the same. The HD is brand new and I doubt that that is faulty. Any thoughts??

    thats odd?

I was expexcting you to say XP, I have so much trouble with XP and the USB to SATA enclosures.

have you tried another USB port? I imagine so.

well a little research and I found this info.

this was based on a XP machine but I imagine this could be extended to newer OS'

Google WD caviar Green DOA and a lot of people report them to be an issue. So I wouldnt rule it out.
