    Hey guys!

I'm having a problem here, I have a barebone notebook and the cooler is not working so well with Windows 7.

I installed Linux Mandriva here, and as soon as I turn the laptop on the cooler goes at the maximum speed, doing a lot of noise. With 7, the SO just doesn't seem to force the cooler, and I'm getting 90ºC+ in games.

Also, in Everest it just says that the cooler speed is at 30%, and that all the time. At GPUZ it says 30%, and at the rotation it indicates 1RPM.

It seems to be a driver/compatibility problem.

    The VGA is a HD4650. Core 2 Duo T6500.

    Thanks in advance

Bumping, trying to solve the problem.

PS.: I was thinking, it could be that the cooler only is activated because of the CPU temperature, and not the gpu. Could it be?

    Guys, got some news.

Speedfan does not recognize any fan on the notebook. I did a search and someone said that it could be related to the fact that the MB of the laptop is ASUS (Pegatron in my case).

I would try to edit the bios of my video card, but I couldn't catch the BIOS from GPUZ, another problem.

    Anyone?

i own one with hd4650 too. i started to believe there is no fan to cool gpu. it was the same when i was using xp and vista.

when i am encoding videos or rendering images i mean when i maximize cpu usage, computer doesnt get hot but when i open a game it quickly starts to get very hot on left side of the keyboard.

maybe cpu is sharing the fan with gpu, maybe not..

I see, but that´s not the problem here - I believe that the HD4650 doesn't really have a cooler either.

THe problem is that in Linux Mandriva the cooler just works well, it goes 100% when it gets hot.

But in Windows (XP, Vista and 7), the cooler doesn't work as it should! In Everest it marks everytime that the cooler is at 30%, in GPUZ it says 30% and 1RPM!

The GPU should be cooled by a heatsink which is in turn attached to a heatpipe that leads to the fan, which spins to cool an assembly of fins that dissipate the heat. Your 4650 is certainly being cooled. You should:
    - check that the fan is spinning
    - ensure that the machine is sitting on a flat surface like a desk
    - check the temps using Hwmonitor (you've done this already, I see)

I'm sure you've carried out the suggestions above, but the next thing to do is to ensure that the fan isn't being blocked or obstructed by dust. Laptops need regular maintenance to the cooling system. Use a can of compressed air to dislodge caked dust on the fan blades and heat sink, then use a vacuum cleaner to suck it out. For a much more thorough job, you can dismantle the machine to gain free access to the heatsink assembly and fan.

    edit: yay, 5,000 posts!

Thanks for the help. But the problem is not that, I just installed Mandriva again and the cooler works at 100%, when I put any Windows in it it doesn't seem to even reach 50% of the rotation, even at full load, or playing a graphics demanding game like Crysis - this one shutted down my computer because of the high temperature.

just a question i saw this is a barebones notebook. when you built it and put in the CPU and stuff did you make sure the heat sink was re attatched properly and thermal paste was put on because even with no fan a GPU should not reach 90 degrees when its doing nothing.

have you checked for bios updates too as this might be a known problem which can be solved with an update.

oh and programs like speedfan work on very few laptops, they are aimed at desktops

if this notebook is new and nothing else works send it back and ask for a replacement

Disable desktop compositing. Other than that, fan control is done by the BIOS, and so is independent of the OS in use.
