    Hi,
    Wonder if anyone can help.

I have an old DELL INSPIRON 6000 laptop that a few months ago started showing things on the screen very faintly - on the laptop - but fine when displayed on a monitor.

I've now altered both the inverter *and* the screen, but still get the same problem.

Anyone any suggestions as to how I can go about debugging this problem to actually find out what's causing it?

    Many thanks for any help,
    R

Try hooking it up to an external monitor to see if it is the video card.

    Hi,

Yup, already tried that. Works fine when plugged into an external monitor, when not plugged in, or when try to CTRL-F8 (or whichever key it is - I can't remember), just get very faint and dark screen.

Remember, I've tried replacing the inverter *and* the screen - get same affect.
Also get same affect whether running Windows XP or latest version of Ubuntu.

What I'd like to know is how else to try to fix it .... where should I look for possible causes?

    Thanks for any help,
    R

Sounds like the backlight might be your problem... make sure the two pin connector from the screen is located properly in the socket on the inverter board (will only push fully in the right way round), if not you will probably need to buy a new backlight , though more likely a connection if you have tried another screen
