Hi, I'm using an MSI GX620 to play games, and recently the temperatures have been very high. After 10 minutes of playing my GPU temperatures will be in the 80's (degrees celsius). My record has been 98 degrees (when the fan was accidentally covered by a cloth for a few mins while I was playing). I'm using HWmonitor to record temperatures, so I'm guessing this is accurate.

I'm pretty sure temperatures in the 80's after playing for 10 minutes is insanely high. I doubt there's any dust stopping the fan from working effectively (but maybe?). I'm thinking the heat sink may have been displaced after a knock?

Anyway, my laptop is under warranty but my question is, what should I do? I should probably refrain from playing games for now so the computer doesn't get damaged, but I would really prefer not having to send it back to MSI as I imagine that would take a long time :/. But if I send it to be repaired (or to have it opened up) at some computer store, that would void my warranty. Is it worth it sending it in to MSI, would they even do anything about it?

Thanks, I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff
    :)

What was the temps when you bought it? Get some dry air in can and purge the vents with it before sending it anywhere. IMO, that is not that hot.

Also undervolt your CPU and GPU and use a notebook cooling pad... temps will drop a lot...

    What gaphics carddo you have?
Roughly "the more powerful the hotter under load".

But 80ies under load sound pretty much alright for a midrange card :) (8400M GS for example)

Also, say you assume its the fan/heatsink - what's your idle temperature?
Start laptop in the morning, leave it on for 10-30 minutes on idle and monitor the temps - that would give you an idea if the ventilation and cooling is working well :)

    Sounds like a patio heater then :D ( ;))

I don't think 80ies under load are abnormal for it.

To be sure, find another monitoring app that works with your machine and see if its readouts match what hwmonitor is telling you.

My 9600M GT goes to 83-84 C occasionally but is usually 70 ish wehn gaming.... also OP try blowing some compressed air in your vents .. might clear out the dust...

    Driver update?
    Clean the vents
I agree with DetlevCM, check the idle temps

Ok I checked idle temperatures and they are: CPU: 38 degrees GPU: 48 degree. this is when it's running on batteries
when it's plugged in, the temperatures suddenly jump up to 40 and 51, and stay around there
    does that look ok?

I checked the "NBR Cooling Central" thread and it seems GPU temperature in the 80's aren't that bad as long as it stays below 90. Good news, this means I was probably being paranoid and there's nothing to worry about. My drivers are updated, so nothing I can do regarding that. I think I will try undervolting just in case, it looks promising.

Anyway, thanks for all the replies and advice everyone :)

    Just on a side note:
51° seems pretty much alright for idle temperatures.

These are perfectly normal temps. Even if you don't undervolt - don't worry.

Yeah, i have a 570M (8600M GT) in my T61p and played L4D2 on it, i like it to stay fairly cool when gaming as it has the chip packaging material defect. Peak temps are 75C but 80 for you doesn't seem out of line. Idle temps of mine are about 43-45 but i live in a cool house (60-65).
