Hello everyone!
It's my first post here but I've been lurking for a few years and thanks to your useful guides I've been able to upgrade my (really) old laptop. I promise that I'll keep this thread updated since I'll solve the problem.![]()
I didn't know where to open this thread but I thought the Hardware section would be the right choice, since I'm going to talk about a "generic" problem. Correct me if I'm wrong!
So, a few days ago I replaced the screen (LP154W01) of a Compaq Presario C500 with a new one (LP154WX4). Now the picture is perfect but other problems have emerged:
- the lower part of the display (where the inverter is located) is emitting a buzzing noise, and is fairly hot
- keyboard and touchpad get unresponsive
I've been told that on a second occasion the laptop (which is not mine) emitted a few warning beeps through the speakers.
Now the laptop is not in use.
The new screen should be compatible with C500 series.
I think there's some kind of electrical problem, and thinking about the lcd I noticed the old lcd had two small flaps with a hole in them ( like in this picture, at the bottom of the screen), connected to the metallic body of the monitor. They stayed exactly between the chassis and the inverter (which is secured to it with two screws).
Could this be the problem?
Should I try to take that part from the old lcd?
Thanks for your help, and sorry if some parts are obscure, but english is not my native language.![]()

The inverter is getting hot and making noise? That is a big problem. Inverters do go bad. Was the replacement screen brand new? It could be that the older CCFL bulb was really worn out and passing a lot less current than the new one, in which case the old worn out inverter can't keep up with the new bulb? Idk, that is just a wild guess.

as for those metal tabs, unless the inverter would bolt in them they are usless as far as your problem goes. they are just there to help hold the screen close to the front bezel.
now the keyboard and mouse issue. did you have to unhook them to take the screen off? then i'd bet 10 to 1 the connectors are not quite right and as things heat up their pins may be moving just enough to short out with the neighboring pins.
hope it helps,

Thank you guys for taking the time to read my problem.
What made me think about an eletrical problem is this picture: http://www.lcdparts.net/Images/howto/XB/XB_howto2_1.jpg
specifically the part which says "ground", which is exactly where the screw goes. So they're not bolted but touching.
From a "brightness" point of view I didn't notice any difference between the old lcd and the new one, I don't know if it means anything or if this could hide the fact that the old CCFL was worn out.
If that's the problem I should just replace the inverter, am I right?
About the keyboard issue yes, I had to unhook it, but not the touchpad.
Tomorrow I'm going to try to fasten the connection (I've also got a second keyboard, just in case, I've damaged the flat cable of the one I'm using). -
Update: yes, I've damaged the keyboard flat. With the other one everything works.
About the inverter noise: I managed to take those flaps from the old lcd and add them to the working one. Now the noise is quieter but still there. I think I'll just buy a new inverter.
