I bought a second HD for my laptop, put in the jumper for 'slave' and installed it. The computer for some reason will not recognize it. Do I need to do something for it to see the second HD? It's a HP dv8310ca and the HD is a Samsung 120GB one. Thanks in advance!

Since you've already installed it, I assume you have the necessary bracket for the second HDD.
Make sure the plugs are firmly connected; check in you BIOS for some second hdd option. I cannot remember if there was such an option but it's worth checking.

If you check the Device Manager and located the HDD, it means, you haven't formatted it yet. Otherwise, I have no idea.

Unless they are on same chain, any reason why you are putting it as slave?

Is the second HDD instead of the optical drive? If so, it is probably the first device (ie not slave) on the second IDE channel. The BIOS information page should list the HDD if it is recognised.

Hmmmm....the BIOS sees the 2nd HD, Device Manager sees it, but Explorer doesn't. The first (OEM) drive's jumper is set to 'CABLE SEL'. What should the second HD be set to? I suck...

If the Device Manager sees it but explorer doesn't it needs activating. Go to the control panel, Administrative tools, computer management, click on the disk management tab. You'll then see your new drive, probably as D: or E: or something. Right click on it and hit initialise.

    It should now work.

Follow Jess's instructions, but format it also.
