Ok so my USB ports used to be able to recognize plug and play devices and they worked fine.
Now for some reason my USB ports won't recognize them but the devices that I installed or use on my notebook before they stopped working still work fine (like my wireless microsoft mouse)
I've tried to find some kind of USB drivers from Sony but couldn't find anything. I am not really sure what kind of files I should be looking for to solve this problem.
I know I am not the only FJ170 owner that has his issue. Anyone have any ideas of what I should do?

Try updating your Chipset/Motherboard driver
-
Yep, if you have an Intel based notebook download and install this:
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...il_Desc.aspx?agr=N&DwnldID=6934&ProductID=816
It's the Intel chipset installation utility which will update/reinstall your USB ports. -
thanks, will try

downloaded, installed it, plugged in the same mouse onto a different usb port on my laptop. Didn't work
Is there a program I am supposed to run after installing it cuz I don't see anything.
What happens is I plug in something, it will recognize the device and name of it but it can't install the drivers automatically or anything. -
Well not all USB devices will have automatically installing drivers, only some. Did your mouse come with a driver CD?
-
yea it did but I know my Microsoft mouse is plug and play because you can use it without installing any drivers on other laptops.
My USB ports will recognize USB flash drives in the taskbar but I can't use it at all and it always ask to install the drivers.
I have a printer and when I connect it to the USB, it asks to install the drivers and I have the drivers cd and it just says can't find the drivers. -
The MS mouse should definitely install itself, the printer you would need the drivers, and the USB should auto install as well.
It could be that your Windows install files are corrupt, go to RUN and type SFC /SCANNOW
you will need your XP CD however so it can copy the files from it.
If that doesn't work you may need to reinstall the OS. -
I ran into exactly the same problem a couple of days ago, did not write down the Vaio model number but the guy is bringing it back today. He is not computer literate and uses primarily for email and browsing. When stationary he has a printer connected. He also uses a jumpdrive for backup.
He has a nice Canon camera and recently attempted to load software and connect via USB. Could not get it to work. Called me. I suggested that he simply use an adapter to plug his CF card into the Vaio and not bother with cables. He came in and got the adapter. Popped it in and guess what, tried to find drivers. Would not work. I put in my jump drive, same thing. Tried several other devices and nothing worked. Put his jump drive in and it recognized it and worked perfectly.
I tried the Intel download above and it had no effect.
Were you guys able to find anything short of restore?
Thanks
