Processing Speed

Could someone tell me how fast of a CPU I should buy if I have a 8800M GTX and an 8600M GT 512mb DDR?

if I buy 2g of RAM then how much ram do I need? What I mean is that I dont want my CPU to slow down everything else? I think it's called a bottleneck but not sure..

Also, is 2g of RAM sufficient? or should I actually consider getting 4G and upgrading to Vista Ultimate 64 bit? if I stay with 2g I'll probably get Vista Home or stick with XP

just trying to get a laptop as cheap as humanly possible...since the 8800M GTX is fairly expensive

 

For gaming, as long as you're running a Core2Duo with 2GB of RAM, you'll be fine. The GPU is the bottleneck when it comes to gaming performance and the 8800M GTX should do quite well. However, I'd recommend at least 2.0 GHz [T7250 and above] for your processor, just to be future proof [or that's just me].

I wouldn't get Vista-64 just to run the whole 4GB of RAM, considering 64-bit can have compatibility issues with some games. 2GB of RAM should be sufficient for games, as RAM rarely, if ever, bottlenecks gaming performance.

Bottom line: 8800M GTX, C2D, 2GB RAM, and you'll be fine.

 

^^Agreed, and if you get a good deal on a little slower CPU should still be OK for almost all games. Also the term "bottleneck" is not an absolute always. By that I mean that depending on what you are doing almost any component can be the "bottleneck" sometimes your HDD will be the "bottleneck" no matter if you bought the fastest or not, Depends on what you do same goes for CPU, GPU whatever. Depends what you are doing at the time. All you can do is get a well balanced system.

 

Ah, I was assuming he was going for a gaming system [why else would he pick 8800M GTX?] but he never really mentioned what he was using the laptop for.

TASK - BOTTLENECK
Gaming - GPU
Multitasking - RAM
etc. etc.

Depends on the task, different components will bottleneck performance. But for gaming, it's definitely the GPU most of the time, although it can also be dependent on the game itself.

Um, do you think that I should try to get 2.4 ghz or is 2.0 ghz enough? I honestly dont want to spend too much except if it's worth it for things in the future I guess that's okay too...

Um, what is the difference between Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile Processors and Intel Core 2 Duo Processors?

I'm assuming the one without Mobile is better, and if I'm right, can someone tell me by how much? like between 2.0ghz Mobile and 1.86ghz non mobile perhaps?

 

Mobile CPU have a different pinout, run at lower voltage and lower clock speeds.

 

ohh... so that is good because that means the battery life is longer yes? but lower clock speeds means that it'll be slower I'm assuming?

 

Yes, lower power requirements and lower heat.

Higher clock means higher performance, with more power required and more heat dissapation.
