Hello Everyone..
I'm confused which processor brand should I be using in my new HP laptop?
And which clock speed as well ? ... for example HP laptop powered by intel core 2 duo it's clock speed is 1.5 GHz... and another one powered by AMD 64X2 dual core with clock speed 1.83 GHz or maybe 2 GHz , which one is better?
There are many good offers for HP Laptops powered by AMD 64X2 dual core and they suite my budget ... which is not almost the same case for those powered by Intel core 2 duo
Either ways I want to have no troubles at all with multi-tasking applications(mostly using Mathematica,Matlab, office) , I will be using Windows Vista , and 2 GB Of RAM.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon ... Thanks in advance...

Don't think brand! All you mentioned are good. AMD are less expensive and a little slower than Core 2 Duo clock for clock, one added bonus of buying an AMD on budget systems is somtimes the Graphics (GPU's) are better. Turion64 X2 and Core 2 Duo are all good, core duo are also good but do not support a 64 bit OS, for most that does not matter. All will run the apps you mention no problem at all at any CPU speed.

The Core 2 Duo consistently beats out the Turion X2. If you look here, you can see that the 2.0 Ghz Core 2 bests the competition by 40% in some cases. I would say that the 1.5 Ghz Core 2 would beat the 2.0 Ghz Turion X2 in most, if not all, instances.
By the way, I haven't seen a 1.5 Ghz Core 2 around... are you sure you aren't referring to the Pentium Dual Cores or a Core Duo? That may change the equation... -
Thank you baddogboxer ... my current laptop is powered by core duo 1.73 GHz with 1 GB RAM.. but I'm not pleased with it's performance... if i understand you correctly... is upgrading the RAM upto 2 GB recommended for me than buying a new latop with higher configs ?
Thank you ShadowoftheSun ... here in this link a core 2 duo with 1.5 Ghz

If you run XP less of a boost But if Vista 2GB should solve most problems, your CPU looks fine, so if a problem look at RAM like you are or HDD?

Since your using Vista, you will see a significant increase in performance going from 1gb to 2gb. Go for it!

Your contribution while mostly factual is neither helpful or constructive to the question. Your boutique benchmarks are not real world. And other than bragging about Intel you really don't say much and what you imply is incorrect or irrelevant to the question.
Core 2 Duo is fastest
Turion64 X2 and Core Duo about the same I say AMD just a little faster.
Two computers the same price the Core 2 Duo same speed I would buy unless it had a much inferior GPU which some do. Both brands are good quality products that will do what you ask. Now if you and ShadowoftheSun are going to sit around and benchmark don't go with AMD. If you are going to use it, all are good and other components will or should come into consideration when choosing what to buy!
ShadowoftheSun a Core 2 Duo bests a Turion at same clock SOMETIMES AS MUCH AS 40%, you go on to say you believe 1.5Ghz Core 2 will best a 2Ghz Turion? Well you said sometimes and I am thinking much less in others? The AMD in your example is 33% more than your 1.5Ghz, also your 1.5Ghz has 2MBL2 not 4 which is in general considered a 10% boost so redo your numbers! -
A 2GHz Turionx2 will probably be faster than a 1.5GHz Core 2. Will be close. Anyway the major advantage of Turionx2 based is the GPU that usually come with it. Many have Nvidia 6150 which is pretty decent. The Intel X3100 isnt bad however the drivers still suck.

between a 1.5 C2D and 2.0 Turion X2, the Turion X2 is the faster chip.
