    AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-60(2.0GHz/1MB)

    Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T5600 (1.83 GHz)

I get virtually the same price with my configuration for these processors at HP. So before I make the final decision I'd like to get some advice from informed people. I'm mostly interested in their gaming performance. I don't want to start the same old AMD vs Intel discussion, I'm sure both companies make good processors and each of them excell in some area. However Intel processor is 1.8 Ghz and AMD is 2.0Ghz. Does it make a difference? Which should I chose?

Are you looking at the dv9000 series? If so, what is your configuration? Perhaps we can find some other notebooks for you to look at too.

The Intel Core 2 Duo will easily outperform the AMD Turion processor, especially when it comes to gaming; go for the T5600. The clockspeed does not make much of a difference these days; the 170MHz clockspeed advantage that the AMD has doesn't mean a whole lot. The Intel gets more done per clock.

Yes, I am, I want a laptop that will last for a year or two and will be suitable for gaming. 1300-1400$ budget. I'm also wondering whether upgrading RAM to 2 Gigs, Upgrading HDD to 7200 RPM or video card to 512 mb would affect performance the most. Thanks alot for your feedback!

Intel's Core based processors are on average at least 15%-25% faster at the same clockspeed than AMD's K8 based processors (depending on the application of course). It has been benchmarked and shown to death all over internet hardware review sites for a while now (Anandtech, HardOCP, Tomshardware to name a few).

So, in a nutshell, the Core 2 Duo T5600 (@ 1.83GHz) will handily beat the Turion 64 X2 TL-60 (@ 2.0GHz) both in abosolute performance, and performance per watt comparisons.

The 2GB RAM, by far. The hard drive will also be a big jump, but not as drastic as the memory, and I think it will void warranty if HP doesnt offer the option (they dont on the dv2000 or the dv6000). The 512MB video card will make very little difference, if any at all.

Any Core 2 Duo will outrun any Turion X2 as far as I know.
