Did he switch the processor? If it's an upgrade, make sure the old processor still works and get the latest BIOS. If both of these check out, there is a chance that the processor is dead, but that's really quite rare. Also make sure he hasn't forgotten something stupid - like forgetting to lock down the new processor after installation.

If it's not an upgrade and you're under warranty, call Dell and complain :p

The only surefire way to test if a processor is dead is to install it on a motherboard that's been verified to work with the same processor... I don't understand though; is your friend upgrading FROM an X7900 or TO an X7900? In the former case the X7900 probably the faster chip and in the latter case, why is he installing the T8300 again?

Could also be a dead MB (seems a lot more likely than a dead CPU).

He installed a new X7900. Upgrading from T8300. And I wanted to know if anyone have faced any problem in processor and got sort of error code or something which running DELL diagnostics. Dell XPS M1730 cam handle X7900 and X9000.

So is it the T8300 that's not working or is it the X7900 that's not working?

Well if the T8300 still works, then it's looking like your X7900 might actually be defective. I do believe that the M1730 should support the X7900 from A01, but just for the record, what BIOS do you have?

Can you hear the hard disk or fan turning? If so, it's probably a monitor connection or video card issue. Otherwise, it wouldn't surprise me if it's something with the motherboard or CPU connection. Probably mechanical damage from the upgrade - the X7900 shouldn't have caused any damage by itself (unless it was electrically defective). Does it look like any pins or pin connectors have been damaged? I'm not really sure what to suggest here - if it's a manual CPU upgrade it's not covered by warranty.

If the T8300 isn't working as well, reinstall it and call up Dell.

You can try removing the battery, AC, all sources of power - hold down the power button for 10 seconds, and then try to boot.

Also, make sure that the RAM modules are properly seated, and the CPU socket screw is fully locked.

The X7900 is fully supported by the XPS M1730. There is no reason why it won't be.

That is why I am also shocked that it is not taking X7900.
Thats why I am asking if anyone know what sort of error or problems one face if the processor is faulty. So, that I know if the processor is good or bad and then work out with dell.

If both the T8300 and X7900 don't work, then the fault is not with the new CPU but with the motherboard or one of the other components such as the RAM, HDD, etc. Its unlikely that you both the CPUs are faulty. CPUs don't die unless they have a crack on the die or a broken/missing pin.

You can try installing the X7900 in another Santa Rosa based notebook, or try and install another Santa Rosa based CPU in your M1730.

    Ok.
So what sort of symptoms we can see if the processor is dead?

The notebook won't boot. When you switch it on, you'll see a blank screen. But every BIOS is programmed differently to respond to a dead CPU.

That's exactly what happened to my Acer Aspire 1682 WLMi - and it's a faulty motherboard, I can assure you. The laptop received power, turned on, you could hear the HDD take a few spins and the fan started functioning - but that was it. Neither the Acer logo appeared on the screen, nor any button could lead me to the BIOS - just to check for any diagnostics.

The funny part was that the laptop did not turn off! I had to remove the battery, not only take it out, but also wait for a while, in order to stop the machine from receiving power.

BTW, Andy, thanks for the advice over a previous thread! I appreciate it!

    Tom
