I've recently started searching for a laptop to use for university, and because I have a budget the only laptops in my price range all use the athlon processor. I have had friends who have told me that the athlon is no good, full of problems and doesn't run smoothly. One of my buddies had bought a laptop with an athlon, but it was so glitched that he had to return it for a turion instead.

I guess what my question is, is the athlon processor for these laptops really that bad or was he just unlucky with his laptop?

    Thanks in Advance,

    - kyo

Maybe he used an older Athlon processor, but the current ones use the same core as the Turions and Turion Ultras, just with less Level 2 cache. From what I've heard, they're solid.

AMD has not released any mobile cpu's with bugs. The problems your friend had with his AMD laptop are most likely due to design flaws of the laptop.

AMD's bugged processors like there Barcelona Quad core server cpu's are slated with a TLB bug. Its just a load of marketing is what it is. Any rightful server uses ECC memory, which blocks and prevents errors from occurring.

There is no downfall of buying an AMD based laptop. Intel has slightly more power efficient solutions at a higher price. However AMD has better integrated graphics solutions.

If your getting an AMD, look for a RM or ZM series processor

Intel only have around 25% better efficiency.
If you don't need that extra 25% longer battery life and don't demand a quadcore processor or something extreme, AMD will probably be a better choice since it's cheaper.
