One of my notebook computers is an IBM 2652 (PIII 1GHz). However, the processor is only running at 729MHz. How should I start troubleshooting the problem? No one has tampered with the computer.

This could be just the intended operating speed of the processor when the notebook is operating on battery power. (Intel calls this "Speed step"). You may be able to control this either through the power settings or in bios.

Well, are you unplugged? Did you downclock it in anyway? If you have it unplugged, it automatically downclocks itself.

Well, with a Pentium 3 you wont see to much of a difference between those two speeds.

True. But the point of this discussion was to understand why the original poster's notebook was running slower than its maximum speed.
