I will be buying a new laptop and would like some help in determining the processor to buy. I am prone to Intel rather than AMD but not dead set against AMD.

I will beusing the laptop for all Office applications, Adobe Acrobat Professional, Scan & edit documents in Scansoft Paperport, and some minor amout of photo editing. I also am a heavy internet user. I am not a gamer or CADD user.

Please help me decide on which processor and which speed would meet my needs. I do not know if I will wind up XP Pro, Vista 32 bit or Vista 64 bit. I tend to keep my machines for about 4 years or maybe even longer so I need something with enough power for future needs.

Please help with processor and if you have any comments about the operating system I would be happy to hear abput that also. :)

Amd will be cheaper but intel will be fast. Intel and amd are pretty close in the low mid range area but once you go high mid range and high end amd has nothing at all so you have to go with intel. How much are you willing to spend?

I am not looking to cheap out. I would prefer to "error" on the faster side.

I am expecting that the total cost for the laptop will be around $1000.

Performance wise Intel is the way to go at that price point. You may want to go with a newer P**** 25 watt CPU for better battery life.

I was trying not to lead anyone with the answer that I have in my mind. I was somewhere between the T6400 and the T8600 so I guess I still need some more info so that I get adequate horsepower. :)
