I run Sony VAIO PCG-FX340 which I bought back in 2001. I recently upgraded my hard drive to a Samsung MP0402H and I love the results. I am interested now in upgrading my processor, from the existing PIII 733MHz to the Pentium M 725. Can this be done? I know you can't upgrade a PIII to a P4 because the sockets are different. But I thought I read somewhere that the Pentium M's are based on the PIII's, so I'm hoping an upgrade would be compatible.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Unfortunatley, that is not possible. If you are going to upgrade the processor, you are better off getting a new notebook. Plus, the rest of the hardware would be old, and that would outweigh the benefits of the faster processor.
Just take that new hard drive and put it in the new one -
I agree with ChazMan--it's probably not possible. Motherboards generally support only cetain processor speeds, and I doubt that that big of an increase would be supported.

Indeed. In the highly unlikely event the pin structures were compatable, the differences in manufacturing process, bus speed, power consumption, and heat output would literally either set your motherboard on fire or fry the processor itself. Neither one is particularly good.
