Hey everyone,
I want to know if it's possible to upgrade a 90-nm 630 intel processor to a 65-nm core 2 duo E6300(or any 65-nm), if I can would it be bottlenecked by my nVidia 6800 Go with 256mb which is said to be 'user upgradeable' and I also have an Asus usb network adapter that only takes in 54mbps and I want to know what kind of usb network adapters are out there that can take in at least 100mbps?
Future thanks to all the replies.
My laptop is an Asus Z81SP with:
Intel Pentium 4 630 w/ 3Ghz 800Fsb 90 nm
nVidia 6800 Go with 256mb
Asus usb network adapter
1 Gig of RAM

1. I dont know much about intels, but going from 90nm to 65nm shouldn't be possible because of the socket - unless they make a 65nm CPU that is made for the socket of your motherboard (espcially not from a p4 to a core 2)
2. They make Wireless network adapters than go above 100mb, but the adapter must be compatible with that specific router that pushes above 54mb - (108, or new draft-n 300) (refer to router manf. website to see what router/WNIC combo works) (suggested if new, Dlink, Linksys) - also note that if you use it for browsing the internet, you will see no difference unless you do major file transfers inbetween computers over your wireless -
3. most laptop Video cards are not upgradeable, check Dreamers sticky for more info, VERY informative.
If you can upgrade your CPU, I would say it might be a little bottlnecked from the card, but you should still see performance upgrade, also I have heard that the 65nm technology is not so much for performance but for lower voltages leading lower heat temps - -
While the socket that both processor use may be the same, the chipset probably isn't. The new Core 2 Duo E6300 will only work on a 975 or a newer 965 chipset. Your notebook has a 915, I think. So, no upgrade can take place. You can upgrade to a faster Pentium 4 processor (670 model), and your cooling system should be able to handle that. Your processor isn'ta bottleneck at the moment. In games, the graphics card often is, and your bottleneck is the graphics card. The Go 6800 may be MXM Type III, however, upgrades are expensive and limited. The only other Type III cards available are the Go 7900 GS and Mobility X1800. There is a Mobility X1900, but it is not available just yet. Also, these cards may not fit into the notebooks, and will probably have thermal constraints. Upgrading graphics cards is generally a no go area almost 100% of the time.
A network card is not limited by the speed at which it can transfer data, but how fast the hard disk or the source can get it to the card. Hard disks, even fast ones, have rates of about 50 to 60 MB/s, so if you upgrade your card to a 100 MB/s, you won't be gaining much. Hope this helps.
