As far as processor choices for the Inspiron 1720 go, which one is better and what do these numbers mean anyway?

One is the T8300 2.4ghz/800mhz fsb/3mb cache while the other is T7500 2.2ghz/800mhz fsb/4mb cache.

One has a faster processor but less cache memory and the other vice-versa. So...which one is faster and better?

    the penyrn

    the higher clocks matter more

you also get more instruction set so clock per clock, its more efficient

the 1 mb cache difference isn't that important

    EDIT: oh yea

smaller process = cooler = better battery life

The T8300 is a fast processor because it is a newer Penryn CPU even though it has a small L2 cache (correct if I'm wrong here).

Unless you go up to t9300 , it'll not be much faster than meroms.

If you want to get a Penryn just wait a bit and see how Penryn processors perform on the new Intel Montevina plat form.

I think it is just a huge waste to get it now on Santa Rosa considering the current price differential between high-end Meroms and Penryns.

Also ,I read a benchmark from some mag site ,and this stopped me from buying a T8300 powered laptop.

Just between the T7500 and T8300, the T8300 is better. Although the cache is lower, you probably won't use it all. The T8300 is faster, cooler and uses less battery life

The T8300's 45nm process and additional low-power state over Merom-core CPUs results in better battery life --approximately 10-20 minutes more on a charge, depending on usage.

The T8300 adds SSE4 support, so any media encoding/decoding apps or intensive graphical suites that support it will have a significant performance boost.

Additional minor improvements also result in a 5-15% performance increase, depending on application. The L2 cache difference doesn't affect that.

Sum all of these up, and the T8300, IMO, is a better choice.

Id go with the T8300 aswell mostly because its newer technology. It will probably be like an undervolted T7700 2.4 as standard

I havent had a chance to see the default CPU multiplier voltages for the new penryns yet.

I have the T8300 and it works great in terms of heat. Never had the processor go above the low 40's. Even when benchmark apps are running.

CPU-z shows my multipliers as 1.063v when in the 1.6Ghz (half bus speed mode)... and 1.125v or above in all other modes.

That seems high but machine runs cool.

RM clock shows 0.95v for 1.6 ghz (8x) and 1v or above for all other steps.

This is after I ran the tweak to show all VIDs. Previous the numbers matched the CPU-z except for the 1.063v.

i dont know about the low end spectrum but the high end was benchmarked by anandtech.com heres the link to the benchmark comparison. http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3195 . like i said i dont know what it is for the lower clockspeeds but this is what i can find. I tried finding for the t8300 vs the t7500 but i cant find any. It's really up to you theres not much of a diff there. I myself is thinking which one to buy too. If you are buying a new laptop go with the t8300 if there is no price difference, like on dells site but if there is a bit of a price difference you be the judge and think if its worth it. You really have nothing to lose by going with the t8300 since it has a faster clock speed, smaller dye size which converts to cooler operations and better efficiency.

    Verdict

Although the advantages of the Penryn CPU are rather limited, especially for current games which profit far more from a more powerful graphics card, it is still an improvement over the Merom processor and, most important for the notebook buyer, at an identical price.

The T8300 is better than the T7500 in every aspect, it's a no-brainer.

Unless T7500 is $100 cheaper, go for T8300.
