Putting 16 GB of ram on HP Pavilion dv7-6c06ev

Hi all,

I just purchased my HP Pavilion dv7-6c06ev which was shipped with 6 GB of RAM installed.

The specification page of the laptop states that the memory max should be up to 8 GB however, I am not quite sure if they refer to the max capacity of a single dimm or the max RAM capacity of the laptop in total:

I've found this HP Pavilion dv7 and dv7t Quad Edition series | HP Official Store web page from the USA HP site which is for getting a customised HP Pavilion dv7t, which is as far as I can see identical with mine, stating that it can support 16GB DDR3 System Memory in 2 Dimms.

Does anyone happen to know if 16 GB is supported by my system?

Any help will be much appreciated.

 

Well, if you currently have a 2670QM inside, then 16GB should be possible.
RAM support for i series cpu's (most notably SB) is predominantly determined by CPU, not the chipset because the memory controller was moved to the CPU itself (if I'm not mistaken).

Now, there might be a BIOS limit in place by HP, but I don't think this to be the case.

Either way, you can get 2x8GB of the cheapest DDR3 ram and see how it goes.
Hardware-wise, it should work.

Yes, you're right, the MC is intergated in the CPU now instead of being a seperate Northbridge chip.

Do you reckon I can try putting an 8 GB module along with a 4 GB one (i.e. 12 GB in total) or should I try 2 x 8 GB straight away? This can save me some money in case it won't work.

Just purchase from reputable vendor, that has a liberal return policy, like Amazon.

But you should be ok, especially if the same model is now being offered with 16GB memory, it might be when you purchased the laptop, 8GB dimms were not readily available,which is why only 8GB maximum capacity was claimed by HP.One thing, you might want to check, if HP has new BIOS for your laptop, but even that may not be necessary.

 

Even if the model wasn't being offered with 16GB, I'd still take the plunge if I was in your position because the cpu controls the amount of RAM you can use... that, and as Highlander8 mentioned, I'd get the RAM from a vendor that includes a return policy.

But if you think that getting an 8GB stick and trying it out with a 4GB one you already have would be the cheaper course of action... sure... go for it.
As you said, it might be cheaper in the long run if it doesn't work, but as I already stated, there's no reason for why it shouldn.

Aside from that, my own laptop was stated from Acer to support 4GB max ... and as you may have noticed from the signature, I have 8GB.
Simply speaking, my chipset supports it, and there was no logical reason it wouldn't work.
To my knowledge, there haven't been that many cases where laptop manufacturers hard-coded RAM limitation into the BIOS... it was more down to if the BIOS was limited in terms of CPU support.

I am also owner of a HP Pavilion DV7-6C06EV.
I am willing to upgrade the memory to 16GB-1333Mhz or 16GB-1600Mhz.
Also to upgrade the HDD to SSD.
But my real problem is that i cant find any Service Manual or Assembling - Disassembling Manual to see how to replace the RAM and HDD.
Does anyone has any Service Manual or Repair Manual or anything to show how can i change it?
Cause i dont see nowhere to have any screws the notebook so to open it.
