So since my M570TU's 9800m GT died, I've been looking at an nvidia replacement, but I never thought to consider an ATI. So I was wondering if a 4870/4850 would work in a M570TU from someone who's maybe done it. Specifically I was wondering if an Asus W90 4870m would work since this would be a very worthwhile upgrade that wouldn't die on me in a few years, unlike the nvidia solutions.

This is what I was considering, perfect since it's 1)New 2)comes with a warranty

but I've read on here something about the pin layout being reversed or something on the W90 cards, not to mention some vBIOS incompatibilities with certain models.

This post was exactly what I was looking for, but I don't know how or if that was resolved. It's also a different card than the one i have up there, so it's only adding to my confusion

Another wrench into the clockwork, it seems like the W90 has a master and a slave card, and I have NO clue how to tell them apart.

Thanks for linking that thread. I had forgotten about it.

No, the Asus card is not reversed, and the problem is not exactly that the cards vBIOS is bad. Like I said, the 2 cards that I have are fully functional in an Acer motherboard and a MSI one.

Prema is a really good system BIOS modder and knows what hes talking about:
Although it sounds like a vBIOS issue, its clearly more of a system BIOS issue. Not to say a different vBIOS wouldnt fix it.

The master and slave doesn't really make a difference as far as I can tell.

The card in the thread you linked isn't different from the cards I sell or the one being sold in the other link you posted.

Sorry, looks like it wont work. You could however try messing around with an MSI 4850 if you find one, since those do NOT have the same problem with the temp sensors (tested and confirmed). Or you could try an older Alienware ATI card like the 3870 if you want to go ATI.
The MSI card doesn't have normal LVDS output, which means it will only work with DVI or VGA output, not on the internal laptop display.

I actually have one recommendation left that should be more foolproof. Since the MSI, Alienware, and Asus cards all have issues, see if you can find an Acer ATI card. It will be cheap, and old. Might not actually be more reliable than a newer Nvidia card, but it would help that its cheap I assume. This is alienware but you could try it:

I suppose there would be no way to mod the dell vBios to scale the temperature output to a correct/semicorrect reading?
I was really hoping that 4870 would work since it offers quite a performance boost. I guess I'll just keep my eyes out for a new 3700 since thats the only one left that offers a slight performance upgrade and give up on finding an ATI, especially if they don't have LVDS output.
    Thanks for the help though.
