will a switch from a q9000 to a qx9300 be plug and play on vista 64?
Also, is switching out a cpu on a notebook similar to doing it on a desktop?

It will be "plug and play".
How hard it is to switch cpu's depends on the notebook model. I am guessing you have a gaming notebook, in which case it should be fairly easy to do. -

Isn't heat an issue?

yep plug & play, usually not too hard to change the cpu, but usually voids your warrenty.
I would ask myself why first, as the performance boost wont be huge unless your doing specific cpu dependent tasks, and it cost a good chunk of change even a ebayed ES cpu. -

Idk if I really want to do this right now, maybe in 2 years or so when I can get a cheaper cpu.

ummm... how does it void the warranty... if there is a problem couldn't you just reinstall the original CPU and send it in?

usually there is a seal or sticker that has to be broken to get to something like the cpu, it will clearly say "warranty void if broken"
q9000 to qx9300
