So, I remember just a few years ago some people trusted getting QS CPUs from China on ebay, but tech and tech scams move fast. Are QS CPUs still a safe bet from China? Anyone buy recently? Suggested sellers? Bad experiences?

    Thanks

It depends on your vendor, I used someone called ShirleyCPU. Laptopmonkey is also fairly trusted. That being said, I bought an i7 920xm which had no additional chip revisions on the release model so the QS model is more or less equivalent to the production model.

I remember looking at LaptopMonkey when I wanted to try to upgrade a CPU in my last laptop. Although that was years ago and I wouldn't have remembered the name unless you said it so thanks :)

So QS from a kinda reputable source is fine? Anyone else with abad experience with LaptopMonkey?

LaptopMonkey is slightly more expensive than the competition. Generally speaking, QS chips aren't inherently bad unless their stepping greatly deviates from the retail model. I've heard rumours that apparently, Haswell QS units are more power efficient and cooler than their retail steppings.

Yes, it is safe. I buy my ES/QS cpu's in China where they are significantly cheaper and there are lots of different sellers and I have never had a problem.

I would personally spend the bit extra to get a OEM CPU... QS quality can vary greatly but OEM is generally much less variable..

I think it really boils down to which CPU you are getting, as they always say, YMMV.

I had a 4700MQ ES installed from new on my P151SM from a reseller here in Beijing, it lasted 9 months. I have now replaced it with a 4710MQ OEM and won't use ES anymore as it wasnt worth the money I saved.

Ah, a bad experience with ES... This is not surprising as QS/ES are a very mixed bag.. Some people get something really good and some really bad... Sometimes, it's worth the hassle to just pay a bit more and safe with a OEM... They're very very unlikely to fail..
