hey, i received my laptop 2 days ago and i've read somewhere over the net that to prolong battery life, you must remove the battery if you are only using AC Power (or what ever you call the adapter black thing that you plug).. apparently it is bad for the battery to be plugged/charged in always..
how much of this is true and do you guys also do it?
as of now i am using my laptop in my room and i dont need the battery yet coz i wont be bringing it to school anytime soon.. but ive already charged it and drained it once. and now it is fully charged again.
any advice?! thanks. a lot.

All of it is true.
Removing it will promote it's lifetime but it does not necessarily mean that it will leave a lot longer than having it always plugged since it will still deteriorate overtime.
Also having it remove will also make you feel concerned about suddenly losing power.
Here is a much more detailed explanation...

I removed my battery. I bought a notebook for university, but I don't actually take it to lectures. It just stays at home on AC power. I drained it to 40%, and put it in cupboard away from light / heat. I have a friend who had his battery die after a few months because he left his notebook on AC power 24/7 without taking the battery out. Considering how expensive batteries are and that it only takes 5 minutes to take it out, I think its more than worthwhile.
Suddenly losing power isn't a concern for me, since I don't live in a third world country, can't remember the last time we didn't have power, and even if we did lose power would probably either be a) asleep, b) asleep in a lecture, c) gaming, or d) viewing porn. In any of these cases a sudden loss of power would not bring my world to a crashing halt. -
As Shadowfate, Lithium has a shelf life. Baby them all you want, they have one year warranty. Putting the battery on a pedestal sort of defeats the purpose of why you bought a portable laptop, it's a tool to be used but not abused.
I certainly understand people wanting to have the battery last 10 years, the best I get is around 13 to 24 months with the last 3 laptops. -
Failure after months is not because it was plugged in all the time. Something was defective/wrong with the Batt to start with. As said above if you are going to pull out batt to prolong life get the charge down to 40% to 50% and store in a cool place. That will slow the inevitable deterioration down. Put in the fridge (in a plastic bag) if you are way intense. But your batt will still last a couple of years if you leave it plugged in, so you choose.

I like to take the battery pack out cause i noticed it gets hot even when im running on AC power
and as we all know heat is a main killer of battery cells -
People buy notebooks for more reasons than simply being able to use it without AC power. It takes less space on your desk. It doesn't require a clutter of cables to run. Its possible to take it with you in a suitcase if you fly back and forth between home and work, or in my case home and university. Its also easy to carry to the library, where funnily enough they have power outlets, so I don't need a battery.
I may need the battery in the future though, so it makes sense to take 5 minutes to remove and store it, in the hope of preserving it.
