Hello !
I will receive my M860TU tomorrow ! and I also just ordered a GTX 280M.
I would like to know what would be the best CPU to have the best performances in game.
And I will overclock the GTX 280M and maybe the chip a bit if it's possible.
(I will mostly play FPS like crysis/stalker, maybe RPG like oblivion, maybe some GTA4 but not much as it disappointed me)
QX9300 ?
I already own it, which was originally for my M570TU, unfortunately it didn't work in as it's not a M570(E)TU or a M570TU v2. But now I wonder if it is better to have a 2.53 Ghz Quad Core processor or a 3.06 Ghz Dual Core processor...
H-Emmanuel seemed to be finally a bit disappointed by Quad Core CPU for this laptop with a GTX 280M, but I don't mind if I cannot play on the battery.
But why does it work pretty well in the "Anothergeek" M570TU ?
Both M860TU and M570TU has a 120 Watts adaptater and Anothergeek seems to not have any problem when overcloking the QX9300 at 2.93 Ghz with his overclocked GTX 280M.
I may be wrong but for now I don't understand why there would be a problem.
But as I said first I want the best FPS in games.
What about overclocking the QX9300 with setFSB ? I managed it with my M570TU using other PLL and I got 287 Mhz * 11,5 (and couldn't choose anything else) , I read once someone managed to overclock his QX9300 in his M860TU at 2.73Ghz ( 9,5 * 287 Mhzlooks like he did the same thing with setFSB that I did with my M570TU)
In this case wouldn't it runs better than the T9900 @ 3.06 Ghz (or even at 3.3 Ghz : 287 * 11.5) ?
But the drawbacks , is high temperatures for CPU & GTX 280M as they both use the same heatsink, maybe it's not good for GTX 280M overclocking.
T9900 ?
With the same speed than the X9100 but with a lower TDP it looks really good as it would reduce the temperature, and save some energy.
It also looks to perform better in games than the QX9300 at CPU stock speeds.
However I've never seen a good performance comparison in games between these CPUs.
Except in 3DMark06, thanks to H-emmanuel.
He scored less than 100 points more with his QX9300 than with his T9900, it's really disappointing for a quad core, though he had a good CPU score, but it lowered his GPU score.
I prefer having a minus 3DMark 06 score and better game performances..
However 3DMark06 isn't always revelant for game performance...
Maybe it's better to compare with 3DMark Vantage, 06 is getting old.
Hopefully thanks to setFSB (although M570TU/M860TU aren't recognized) I can managed just like I did with my M570TU to set clocks to 3.3Ghz (11.5 * 287Mhz) and have better performances, for a less consuming CPU than the QX9300 / X9100.
The advantage would be a high frequency and a reasonnable power consumption regarding to Extreme chips.
And I can have one very soon.
P9700 ?
I am interested in this one as it has a low TDP of 28watts and a quite high frequency of 2.8Ghz.
But then QX9300 frequency isn't very far! and it's a quad core!
However it would be a lot better for GTX 280M temperature! and consume less power that can be use by the GTX 280M only !
I maybe perform a better overclock with this chips than the others.
But it has a lower frequency, hopefully I can overclock it to 3Ghz with setFSB.
Drawbacks : I cannot find any P9700 chip.. while it would be the less expensive one.
The only one I found on eBay doesn't ship it in my country x__x.
Sorry for such a long thread for just 3 cpus

qx9300 all the way if the "best" is what you are after.

I would say give the Quad another shot, as it would dominant the other two. If no luck, then, go for the P9700, as you won't notice the difference in performance and have better power consumption.

but I haven't the laptop yet to test it and determine what is the best ! I receive it tomorrow
but with a GTX 260M , the GTX 280M will be shipped in a week.
QX9300 or T9900 or P9700 for a M860TU (GTX 280M) ??
