Hey guys! I want to start off with thanks for even reading this.
What I mostly do with my laptop is edit videos (premiere) and use a lot of photoshop, lightroom, and some programming (I go to an engineering school.). These are really my hobbies and now I have some options as far as what I can do with my laptop.

    A) I have an old G71 which runs off a Q9000 and I was thinking I can upgrade that to a QX9650, and upgrade to 8gb of ram.

So how does the QX9650 compare to the new Ivy Bridge i7-3610QM?

    B) To get a g55 (if or when it comes out). Currently have a G75 but it's alright.

    C) Build a new desktop for around a $1000 (because my friend can get parts for really cheap) and the spend around 500 dollars on a laptop and run almost like a server off the desktop.

Option A is def is going to be the cheapest; however, I know that the G72 has an overheating issue, and I don't really know how to take care of this.

And I don't really know how efficient option 3 will be b/c I've seen many people run there desktop from there netbook and tablets; however, I've never personally did it.

    Thanks a lot guys!

Isn't the QX9650 a desktop processor? The fastest penryn quad core is the QX9300 iirc.

Cinebench and 3dmark06 put it around half the performance of an i7-3610qm.

If you find a cheap qx9300 you can overclock them so could see a 50-60% performance improvement over your current chip but it will run much hotter and a modern CPU will beat it quite soundly.
