Hello!
I'm looking at wanting to upgrade the screen of this 16L-G-1080 that I have to something that is 1080p and 144Hz and IPS. Is anyone able to provide a link or a basis on what exactly I should be looking for? If I can't find 144Hz, 120Hz is perfectly acceptable as long as it is IPS.
Screen size: 15.6"

Why does it have to be IPS? It's a common misconception that IPS screens are supposedly better, in reality the best gaming panel until this date is the 120hz TN panel from MSI.
-
Really? I had no idea, I guess IPS isn't that big of a deal then if there are TN Panels that are on par or supersede IPS panels these days.
-
The MSI TN panel is faster, has better color coverage, better blacks, same viewing angles etc. It's "only" 120hz, instead of 144hz, but I'd say anything above 100hz makes minor to no difference anyways.
-
That's great to hear! You wouldn't happen to know where I could find one of those would you? I've watched the process on replacing the panel on these things and it seems pretty simple.
-
Just giving this another bump in case this slipped past you. By chance would you know where I can acquire this particular MSI panel?
Is this one of them? https://www.ebay.com/i/372334800364?
Would this also be a compatible model? https://www.ebay.com/i/273473834925?Last edited: Nov 7, 2018 -

Oh and keep in mind you will lose internal G-Sync if you upgrade the panel.

Can you provide a link to the guide(s)/video(s) you used? -
Not the same exact model as mine, but basically the same in terms of hardware and plastics.saturnotaku likes this. -
Woah is this true? Is there a way I can look up this panel and compare it to an IPS? I didn't know TN had gotten so good these days...
-
It's no secret that TN's are good tho.

here you go. -
Would this fit in basically any 15 inch laptop?
For instance, could this fit in the ASUS GM501GS? -
It will cause issues tho, since the panel isn't whitelisted you will lose gsync.
-
Meeeehhh... I don't particularly care that much about G-Sync, but that does suck. Is there a way to white list the panel?
Follow up to that, do you know of any site that compares and ranks panels that can be installed after a laptop is purchased? Looking over the site you sent me, there's thousands of options to choose from it looks like. How do I know which ones are good and which ones are bad? -

Not sure why you would want to, though. The GM501GS already has a 144Hz 3ms AHVA panel. -
Really depends what you need.
Also the difference between the 144hz and 120hz panel isn't that huge. The TN panel is fatser and has bigger color coverage, but it isn't a huge leap by any means. I'd stay with the 144hz panel until it breaks, then you could swap to another panel.
If you think your panel looks awful, then you simply need to calibrate it. -
I think I may be more concerned with brightness then. You wouldn't have to know of a way to make a backlight brighter, would you? -

You can buy the screen for $89.99 from the CDSParts Google Express storefront. If it's your first order, you can use a 20% off coupon code, bringing the price down to $72 shipped.

yuour current screen is already pretty bright, there are only very few notebooks that get up to 400nits. The only panel I'm aware of that gets to 400nits (btw this is extremely bright and most people would step the brightness down a notch) is the one I'øm using in my 17 inch P375SM-A. I believe its an LG.

I bought the screen and got it installed. The video was really helpful, and I made sure to uninstall the GPU drivers before disassembly. The only tricky part was some adhesive that was applied between the bezel and existing screen. This made the two parts tougher to separate than the video indicated. A couple of the tiny plastic clips also snapped off, but that didn't prevent everything from fitting back together. Upon reinstalling the drivers, the 120 Hz refresh rate showed up and applied with no issue. There are no dead/stuck pixels that I can find, and after some color tweaking, it looks darn close to the IPS panel that it replaced. I'm also very pleased with the seller. They shipped the same day I ordered, and the packing job was first rate. There was no way it was going to break in transit.

Think I should aim for 350 nitts then?
-
more like 400, macbooks have around 400nits as well.
-
Yeah, that's why I was saying I'd like a screen with 400nitts of bright or so. I think I could do with 350.
-
Glad this worked out so well! I believe in the comments to the video there is mention of him removing the adhesive from the bezel or it not being as strong since this wasn't the first time that he has taken it off so the first time will always be a bit rougher. But overall as long as the bezel sits flush again and you feel like the new screen is an overall improvement that is all that matters in the end!
Question? Upgraded Screen for the MSI EVOC 16L-G-1080
