Hiya, I have a quick question about upgrading my hard drive for my laptop. I have an HP dv2000t laptop which I bought in 2006, with an 80GB Fujitsu MHV2080BH PL hard drive. I've noticed that in the last year it seems like it's gotten slower (read/write speeds seem a LOT slower than before), even after reformatting. It also seems like I'm running short on space (I do progamming/webdev stuff so I need space for my local webserver, and a couple of virtual machines) so I figure a drive upgrade is in order anyways.![]()
So I was looking around on Newegg and found this drive, but it's a SATA300 drive. My current drive is a SATA150... will the SATA300 work with my laptop?

yes. it will work. sata 300 is backwards compatible with sata 150

*Runs to Wikipedia* *Runs Back* According to Wikipedia the answer is Yes, however the drive will only operate at SATA150 speed unlessthe controller you have is actually a SATA300 controller. If not you need a new controller ie new laptop

Yes it will work just fine. But why are you going to pay so much for 160 gigs? You can get the same size drive from a different maker off newegg for under $100.

Thanks for your replies! I didn't realize they were backwards compatible, but that's definitely good to know. *sticks in back of mind for later*
@stealthsniper96: I guess I'm just a Seagate fan; never had a problem with a Seagate hdd, and their 5-year warranty is nice to have in the event the hard drive goes bad later on.I'll never by another WD hard drive - never had much luck with those. I went through 3 WD desktop drives in one year once; the first was just plain bad, the second died a month after I got it as a replacement from best buy, and the third died just over a year after that.
Since then I've been a Seagate fan. They're kind of pricey, but really reliable.

The majority of notebooks don't support SATA-300 because (a) it consumes more power and (b) SATA-150 is faster than the head's ability to transfer data so the SATA-300 only benefits the few MB which may be in the HDD cache.

I had the 60GB version of that Fujitsu in my laptop and it was a very slow hard disk. I now have an 80GB Seagate Momentus 5400.3 and it's much snappier. I think you'll be pleased with your upgrade.
