What are your opinions on upgrading to an SSD now or waiting til... lets say black friday to upgrade. Will prices go down significantly? I can totally wait til then, but id have some trouble waiting til next year.

Get one now? or hope good coupons come out on black friday/cyber monday for SSDs?

You may have to wait till christmas for the expected (hoped for) big SSD price drop.

Prices will continually drop through out the year, especially as newer tech comes out (ie. lower manufacturing process memory, next generation controllers), so there will always be cheaper and better in the horizon. That being said, there are always deals like the Vertex 2 120GB for ~$200 (<$2/GB is a really good deal right now), so you should just get it when you want/need it.

Without a doubt the best time to buy. Prices also drop prior to the introduction of the next generation of units and during back to school.

I've been thinking the same thing. I decided to wait til Christmas and I bought a momentus xt for now. So later I'll get a SSD for speed and use the momentus xt for storage so it's pretty snappy all around

Typically, my experience has been that after black friday (or even Halloween), other than sales or specials, prices will actually go up. They will not really drop again to current levels until Feb. or Mar.

Prices may fall a touch more before they level off or rise, but don't count on any major changes.

Maybe longer..... Recent articles are not quoting the G3 release to be in February.

Yes since all the new SSDs will be released Q1 2011, there's a good chance SSD prices will be fairly stable the rest of the year.

    Agree.

Prices for computer parts will almost always incrementally drop over time. However, price drops for SSD's will not drop significantly unless there is a major reduction in manufacturing costs. And the most likely way for manufacturing costs to show major reductions is an increase in NAND memory chip densities.

Long story short: Don't expect major price drops this holiday season. Expect them in early-mid 2011, when Intel releases its G3 SSD's

consider that SSDs may still be a boutique product and will carry a premium price for quite a while.
