-How do you tell if the laptop has gone into sleep or hibernate?
-If you are installing something, or loading a program, and then it goes into sleep or hibernate, does the loading/installation a) stop completely b) stop where it was and resume when it gets out of sleep/hibernate c) keep working?
-
Well if it enters either sleep or hibernation, it cancels the loading of a program.
To find out which one the system is entering, go into the power options window, from the control panel. Than you can set when your system goes into hibernation or sleep. You can temporarily override the ability for your system to go into sleep or hibernation, when sitting their installing, by selecting the never option in the power menu.
I hope this helps,

All the laptops I have used (several ASUS, several DELLs, a T40 and a my wifes HP) indicate they are sleeping with the various indicator lights they have. My current ASUS F3SV does a slow fade in/out of the power light. My wifes HP (can't remember the model) blinks a couple of lights. All except the HP turn all the lights off when they go into hibernation. The HP has an extra light that indicates the power is connected and it never turns off when the AC is connected (at least I think that is what that light indicates).
I would expect the install to resume were it is up to when the laptop comes out of standby or hibernate. This is what happens for other applications. I have seen this happen with an install was waiting for me to answer a prompt (started an install, agreed to the licence, walked away to check on the configuration of another machine, got distracted by something else (probably some shiny lights), returned to find the machine in standby the install hadn't happened). It just kept going when I clicked the appropriate button. I don't know what would happen if the laptop decided to sleep during the non-interactive part of the install. I have to admit there aren't many applications that would take long enough for this to be a concern.
