I just bought the MX-4 thermal compound and going to apply it myself. My question is before applying the MX-4, should I use something to remove the original paste? If so, what should I use? Thanks

Isopropyl alcohol (95%+ ideally) and q-tips. You need to remove the old paste before repasting by the way.

If you can find it at your local pharmacy, best is anhydrous alcohol.

And just in case it's illegal (yeah, stupidest thing I've come across), you can get the cheapest nail polish remover (you just need the weak solvent in it) - works pretty well in my experience.

What the? I'm curious where is it illegal to get isopropyl alcohol (also known as rubbing alcohol). There's acetone in nail polish remover, so you could also use acetone, but it's a stronger solvent, so be careful when handling it.

I meant alcohol at pharmacies - it's illegal for them to sell it in Russia (and a few other countries), which is weird since you can get vodka at any convenience store :)

I've seen a 100% acetone solution spill making a mess of an old mobo once.

    The computer never booted again.
