So I started my computer up today and it basically went from 80 - 34% in very little time (I think it started from 80, that's where I cap it) and then at 34%~ it shut down... no prompt, just died.

I'm assuming this means the battery is really messed up. Possibly because I leave the computer plugged in often... but I used to get 3 hours of movie playback so this is strange to me.

I'm wondering about what I can do to better take care of my battery/ next battery AND I'd like to know how I can replace a sony battery with one that I build myself, since their battery cases don't seem normal.

You can search around for a lot of guides on battery cell replacement, there are a ton of them on youtube.

I believe sony does use different technology however, you will have to consult others on this, perhaps search for macbook cell replacement as I believe they have the same technology.
Also I think this technology is the reason why the battery goes from great to horrible in a short amount of time.

Main rules to prolong battery life:

    1. Enable Battery Care option (by Sony you can choose between 80% and 50% - I use 50% as this gives me enough battery life for over 90% of the times I need to run the PC on battery)

    2. Avoid discharging the battery to less then 10%

    3. Whenever you are not going to need it for longer periods of time (longer than a few days) - (dis)charge the battery to about 50-60% and remove it. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from heat and sunlight.

As far as I can tell Sony has normal cells (looking at the battery pack) and not the flat Apple technology! I read you might run into troubles if you use non-original battery pack on sony - a software denies the usage. However if you replace the cells in the original battery it should be fine.

I'm almost certain they use poly ion cells or something, and not lithium ion...
I guess it could be on select models.

Thank you for all of the input.

I use Sony's 80% battery protection. I often can not use my computer for a few days, I usually leave it at 70% and store it in the box I bought it in. I have never discharged it all the way to 10%.

I honestly don't know what happened but it seems that in a short time the battery has degraded a lot.

How do I check the current battery condition? I've seen it a few times and it says "perfect" but I forget how to check.

download batterybar to check your wear level

I downloaded it. It's calculating but it says 0.0 wear. I think it might still be calculating the wear as well. I know I used to get hours of movies... all I was doing when I started up was going on chrome and installing some bluetooth drivers.

According to this I have 0.0 wear and nothing says "calculating anymore"

    perhaps it was a fluke...

Does anyone know where I can buy high capacity cells?

From 80% it's saying discharge rate:

    -23.111 mW

and that I have 1:15 of battery life. That seems somewhat low.

Batterybar, as I recall, might require some calibration before it reaches full accuracy. I know the battery life is based on your historical power usage, so it will depend on how you use your notebook. Battery wear depends on the battery reports, so you'd have to calibrate your battery to get an accurate battery wear.
