I have a dell latitude d520 and was looking on ebay. I see a lot of non functioning laptops on there and since I need a display thought it would be a good idea to pick one up. Could I just swap out the display from another laptop to mine?
Thanks.

Does anyone know if a Dell D600 display will work?
-
that's one option. and yes, a d600 panel will work if your d520 has the 14.1" display. [ source and source]
what size/resolution display did your d520 ship with? i'm finding XGA (1024 ×768), WXGA (1280 ×800), and SXGA+ (1400 ×1050) options depending on screen size. looks like you can expect to spend between $80 and $150 USD if you decide to purchase a replacement panel only.

EDIT:
thinking about this a little more, i'd guess you can probably use a d600 14.1" panel even if your d520 shipped with a 15" display. for some reason i doubt that dell used a different lcd back cover/bezel if you upgraded to the 15" SXGA+ or WXGA panel options. -

Yes you could buy a laptop for parts and swap the screen over to yours - assuming of course that the screen in the parts laptop works. It's a risky investment unless you verify that with the seller.
Regarding swapping a screen from a D600 ... see if you can verify the part numbers for the screens. I would be hesitant to swap a screen from laptop to laptop unless it was the same model laptop. -
check out that first link i posted, Charles. would you take that to mean that both a 14.1" and a 15" screen fit in the same exact model (assuming correct parts of course)?

I would not be hesitant to swap a screen from one laptop to the other when the size, resolution and backlight type are the same, except for the fact that these are 4:3 screens. I've noticed many 4:3 screens are not as standardized as 16:10 ones and cannot be used interchangeably.
Just find the model of the screen or search "d520 screen". These screens are very cheap, seriously, you're probably not going to get a good deal on a screen from a parts laptop as opposed to finding a used screen. -

I am using thinkpad T430s, is it possible to replace a touch screen by myself?
if you have any tutorial that'd be nice so i can use it w/ the coming win 8 -

Thats off the subject. But since you asked, no, thats very unlikely unless they offered it with a touchscreen BUT you MAY be able to get a touch panel and install it on top of the screen.

I guess I was just trying to find a easy way to change it without having to take the whole screen apart. I could just remove the screen from one laptop the whole thing with bezel and all and just plug it up and go.

Here is the part number I got from dell when I put in my service tag

First thing I need to do is connect a vga cable to my laptop to a external display to see if lines still appear. If they do appear I assume it is the video card. If they dont appear assume it is the display correct?
Thanks. -
Here is the model number off the back of the screen

Anyone with insight to what I have posted already above about my approach.
-
Ok I hooked it up to my TV and the lines are gone. So I am guessing it is the lcd display on the laptop itself and not the video card.

Man this site sucks. I get a little help and everyone disappears.

No, the site is okay - your attitude sucks.
Why don't you try re-phrasing your question(s)? -
you asked about replacing the lcd and we helped you. you didn't so much as respond to anyone who replied, much less thank anybody. then you proceeded to post a bunch of useless information only confirming what we told you the first time. your issue is obviously over your head. take the machine to a shop.

Please go back and read and you will see I did respond to othes. This is not over my head as I had to take the whole screen apart to get the model numbes which is what I did to help out a little more. You sir really did not provide any assistance. If someone would have given me more help and gave me a solution I would have thanked someone. I posted on another site and they gave me helpe I needed unlike here.

Please shut this down. What someone posted for me on the othe site. This is the help I am talking about.

oh okay, so somebody linked you to a 15" XGA panel too--and a cheaper one at that! nice. i guess you're a "less option is more" kinda guy. i personally would have gone with the SXGA+ panel myself (pardon the mistake in my first reply, that's actually a 1400×1050 resolution, not 1280×1024), but good job on getting it all taken care of.
