Hello All,
I recently purchased a Lenovo T61 laptop. One of the two memory slots is occupied by a 1G memory (DDR II SDRAM - 667 MHz PC2-5300 SO-DIMM 200-pin).
Now, I want to add another memory to the other slot. Before I do this, I hope to ask a few question to avoid possible problems:
(1) Can I buy memory of different brands but has same tech specifications (DDR II SDRAM - 667 MHz PC2-5300 SO-DIMM 200-pin)? Will memories of different brands cause instability? I don't know the brand of the Lenovo memory, maybe it is brand of Lenovo?
(2) In addition to those specifications (DDR II SDRAM - 667 MHz PC2-5300 SO-DIMM 200-pin), is there any other specification that I need to consider in selecting memory?
(3) For the two available memory slots, if I want to upgrade to 3G memory, can I use (1G+2G) instead of (1.5G+1.5G)?
Thanks a lot for your advice.
Regards,
Derek

1. As long as they have the same CAS lentency, there is no problem. You can check that with CPU-Z
2. See 1
3. There is no 1.5GB stick that I'm aware of, so yeah it's 1+2 -

Most notebook RAM from different sources will work together. Each module contains some data about its properties. The BIOS looks at this information and chooses the fastest timings supported by both modules.
If you want 3GB then you use 2GB + 1GB. The performance will be fine. If you want more information look for the Dual Channel thread in the stickies for this forum.
