Hi I own a Dell Studio 1735 Notebook.
I'm wanting to upgrade my processor I'm currently using a

Intel Core 2 Duo Penryn Processor T8300 (2.4GHz, 3Mb L2 cache) with BIOS revision A02

but if it's possible I would like to fit the following processor

    Intel® Core™2 Extreme Mobile Processor X9000

Would this processor be fully compatible with my notebook ?
Also would I have to flash and update my BIOS ?
I have downloaded BIOS A08 from Dell website but am not
sure whether to flash it or not in case it stuffs things up.

If the X9000 isnt compatible what other options do I have T9500 etc

Any information regarding this matter would be appreciated
    Regards Rick

It is definitely compatible with the computer's chipset, but whether there is BIOS support is another matter.. I think it would work, but also note that the x9000 is 44W while the others are 35W, and the x9000 probably won't be overclockable.

The T9500, however is sure to work.

I also recommend the T9500 if you really need to upgrade your processor. I have exactly that in my Studio 1535, and it's more power than I need, really. Your processor is already 2.4GHz, though, so I'm not entirely sure a processor upgrade would be worth it for you.

As for the BIOS, you should flash the latest version. There's no real reason not to...just make sure you have the battery plugged in along with the AC power adapter.

I agree with this. You'll spend a couple hundred dollars and probably won't notice the difference, even barely in benchmarks.

If your computer is having performance issues, what are they?

Spending gobs of cash for 400 more MHz (or 200 if you don't got for the X9000) simply doesn't make common sense. Save your money, and put it towards things that could actually speed up your system - a RAM upgrade, or moving to an SSD.

Really, it depends on what you need your computer for. If the OP is currently maxing out the load on his CPU, and he needs a faster CPU for work, then $400 is justifiable. If the OP is just gaming or doing other day-to-day tasks, then yes, a CPU upgrade isn't worth the money as the OP would not notice a difference in performance.

Im already running 4GB of RAM so I dont really need any more but I'm using the RC release of Windows 7 but only the 32bit version.
I was told that if I upgraded my processor to either the X9000 or another 64bit processor that my overall PC performance would be a lot better.
I was also told that the 32bit OS can only utilize 3 to 3.5GB of RAM and if I wanted the benifits of the full 4GB that I would need to upgrade my CPU
    Is this the case ?
Im currently using Dells BIOS revision A02 but I have downloaded the A08 revision from Dells website.
So flashing A08 wont cause me any drama's ???? with the workings of the PC

Your CPU is already 64-bit capable, just go ahead and install Vista 64-bit. Upgrading your CPU would not yield much performance difference.

or Windows 7 64 bit since you're already using the 32 bit version. Your processor already supports 64 bit OS's

oh ok thanks for the info guys, I will download the 64bit version of windows 7 and install it tomorrow.
Rather than upgrading my processor what do you guys think about overclocking is it worth the hassel or not.
Also if so what Dell BIOS revision supports it, due to Im using Revision A02 and that version doesnt.

Hoo.... Wait....!!! Your system is Studio 1735 right? Where did you download BIOS version A08 from?

I just went to Dell support site, they only have BIOS version A05 up to now.

I stuffed up the A08 I downloaded is only for the 1737 model not the 1735. What changes were there from A04 to A05 ?
Im using A04 at the momment is it worth me flashing A05 ?

I know no more than what is described in the BIOS version A05 download page:
For me, since they had listed its Level of Importance as Recommended, so I chose to flash it.

I mean replacing your hard drive with a blindingly-fast solid state drive - something like the Intel X25-M or OCZ Vertex.

Hey guys thanks for all the info and advice but I have one last question. If spending the money doesnt worry me and I purchase a Intel X9000 processor I know that its going to work with my PM/GM965 chipset but will it be compatible with my DELL BIOS Revision A04 ????

Does anyone know whether Intel made a Quad core processor to work with the 965 chipset, I googled it as found that maybe the Intel QX6700 would work with my Dell Studio 1735.
I rang Dell tech support and the guy did say that it would work but he didnt sound to confident and didnt give me a straight answer if I would need to update by BIOS from A04 to something higher.
Does anyone know if this upgrade has been done before

The QX6700 is a desktop CPU. It's not going to work in your Dell.
