I just bought an Thinkpad X240 and also have an old Corsair Force GT 120 GB SSD in my desktop, which I could put into the laptop. Is it compatible and do you think it will affect the battery life negatively in comparison to the current 500 GB HDD? (Hitachi Travelstar Z7K500) Thanks!

I'm not familiar with Thinkpad or Corsair. If it will fit it should be able to be used, though it will default to the slowest SATA support - worst case II/3Gbps instead of III/6Gbps.
I didn't catch what OS there was; W7 and up have TRIM support built-in, otherwise you'll need to see if there is SSD software that can manually TRIM the drive.

You could search around NBR and see if there is a thread for your specific notebook model: Lenovo Forum, IBM Thinkpads
