So I recently found out what the recovery portion of my hard drive is for and it sounds like 8GB worth of wasted space to me. I have no desire to return the computer back to its original, factory settings so I'll probably just delete it to make some (much needed) room.
Anyway, my plan was to buy a 1TB+ backup HDD for my laptop and desktop, but someone mentioned "dedicated programs" that will run in the background, decrease performance less when performing the backup, and, if I found the right one, would only update the data that had recently changed which, in turn, would save time on the transfer.
I was recommended this as it compares the files before making changes so it will only update what needs to be updated. Any opinions on it or any other newbie-friendly program?

Okay, a program that lists XP as the last O/S it supports would not be something I would be considering.
For 'free' you can't beat MS's own SyncToy. Not a 'set and forget' type of program - but BU's are not a set and forget type of computer activity either (contrary to Apple's Time Capsule philosophy... sometimes - it just 'doesn't work').
Run SyncToy after you've created/edited an important document(s) and know that the backup really completed.
See:
Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - SyncToy 2.1

I was hesitant about the whole XP thing, but I forgot to mention it in my question. Thanks for addressing that, lol.
But thank you for your assistance, tiller. Highly appreciated.
Question regarding storage space on my HDD and backups?
