I dropped cable TV, but I miss having a TV in my bedroom.

I'm in the market for a notebook, but I'm not fully sure I understand how HDMI works. If I were to output HDMI from my notebook to the TV this will carry both sound/audio, but what I'm wondering is...

The sound will be cut off from the HDMI if I plug in headphones into the headphone jack on the notebook right? I feel silly asking this.

One output or the other with your laptop. However, there are other external devices that will let you monitor by headphones via a loop out. Not sure how that would matter though since you can only watch one video and can't listen to both.

or, in the case of using your tv as a monitor, if the TV has an audio output (analog stereo, be it rca or 3.5mm/aux/line/headphone) and you connect headphones directly to the TV, you will be able to listen to both the TV's speakers and your headphones mutually unexcusively.

and yes, HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) will carry both video and audio signals. the video should work plug-and-play, otherwise you may need to use a 'fn + f_' key combination to toggle the external monitor output. the audio can be configured via windows' control panel and will appear as a "digital audio (HDMI)" in the list of devices. if sound doesn't work automatically when connected, set that as your default device. so to answer your question, the audio will be "cutoff" from the TV if you have a different device set to default, such as your notebook's on-board/integrated sound. (the video will continue to work though.)

    Sounds good :)

For details, I don't want both headphones/speakers sounding at the same time. The headphone usage is just for those late nights I wish to be nice a quiet for my roomate, she gets up at 4AM for work.
