Hello, Ive inherited a laptop computer and have a couple of questions Id like to ask. Im a desktop user so Im a bit out of my depth here. The computer is a:
Compaq 2100ca
Intel Celeron 1.6 G
192 mb ram
If I upgrade the ram to 1G will the fan cycle less often? The fan is so noisy I feel like Im taxiing down the runway in a jet.
Can the fan be easily replaced with a quieter model?
Is this particular model worth upgrading?
I use MS Office and have an interest in digital photography. Im not sure how this computer will perform when it comes to digital photography and I dont want to invest money only to be disappointed. Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.

192MB of RAM? woof. that's not enough. You would definitely make some gains in performance by upgrading that immediately. It'd get you much better performance and also cause less hard drive hits which could in turn cool things down (hard drive spins less). Still, you're going to be hurting to get a whole lot of performance out of this older notebook running on a Celeron. I wouldn't throw too much money at it, just use it for what you can and be happy it was free.

You might just want to get a new computer. That one seems like even though if you do upgrade the RAM, you still will have a pretty bad machine.

I'd say through a little ram in it not a Gig because of the cost. That computer is old and won't be that fast anyway but if your going to use it for word, internet, and e-mail it should do the job just fine.
Compaq R3000T (CTO)
P4 Desktop 3.0GHz w/HT
2 X 1024MB RAM
Radeon 9600 128MB
60GB 7,200RPM HD
AquaMark3: 24,257, 3DMark03: 3,115 -
the hard drive also makes noise.

I've got a celeron 2.8ghz on my laptop and it works fine and it plays halo pretty good. It also plays a lot of other high end games pretty good.
