from what i understand, batteries gradually drain their lifespan over time. since i have my laptop plugged in 95% of the time, would taking my battery out when plugged in and only put back in when i'm actually away from an outlet give it longer life or is its overall life not drained at all when plugged in?
also, i've heard turning your wireless off preserves battery as well. if you're at an airport for example and they have wi-fi but you're not using it and your wireless light is the "off" color, does that count as having your wireless turned off or do you need to manually switch it off (i'm on an hp so i have a switch on the bottom).

Yes you should take it out when you're plugged in. Keep it wrapped in a paper towel inside of 2 ziplock bags, then put it in the fridge. This extends the life of the battery.
If you're not connected to the internet, but your wifi button isn't in the off position, it's still on and searching for wireless connections to connect to. Flip the switch if you want to turn it off. -

so can it go straight from your fridge back into your laptop or do you have to give it some time to warm up to room temp first?

You want to "defrost" it so you won't strain the cells in the battery.
