For 64bit OS, do one need to have 64bit processor to run it?

    Thanks..

    Yes you do.
Any Core 2 Duo should suffice, or any current AMD processor; but do your research.

Is the core 2 duo built on 64bit or 32bit architecture?

If is built on 32bit, then running an 64bit OS, does it mean actually it is only running at 32bit efficiency?

I don't have a core 2 duo system.. Maybe have a way to know..
Any bos here have the core 2 duo running 64bit OS and installed 4GB of RAM, does it show 4GB?

The Core 2 Duo is 64-bit. I'm running Vista Home Premium x64 right now with 4GB of RAM.

Basically, any dual-core processor will be 64-bit. If a processor is not 64-bit, it will not run a 64-bit version of Windows at all.

Sorry, quick question suddenly becomes long...

Read from MS websitem vista 32 and 64 OS are the same price..

I got a bit confused, cause since the price for the OSes are the same, then why retailers selling laptops with core 2 duo processors are bundling it with 32 bit OS instead of the 64bit and this is not all.. They give 4GB of RAM..

It's just because not everybody is ready to make the switch to 64-bit, although I agree it's pretty dumb if they're already selling it with 4GB of memory. Some older programs (16-bit) will not work on Windows x64, and there tend to be more driver issues with older hardware.

In most cases though, if you have a 4GB system that shipped with a 32-bit version of Windows, you can talk to your manufacturer's customer support and request a Windows reinstall disk for 64-bit. The same Windows product key that you already have should still work, as long as it's the same version, e.g. Vista Home Premium 32-bit to Home Premium 64-bit.

I just did this myself a few months ago. My Dell Studio 1535 shipped with 3GB of RAM and Vista Home Premium x86, and I later upgraded the memory to 4GB, so I called Dell and asked about getting a new Windows disk, and they shipped it to me overnight. I backed up my important stuff, reformatted and installed Home Premium x64, and it never even asked for my license key; it automatically used the same one as the previous 32-bit version.

I think there will be performance issues if you install something incompatible with your 64bit..
