Optical Bay Hard Drive Caddy (OBHD-SATA12-SATA-BU) Univ, 12.7mm [OBHD-SATA12-SATA-BU] - $44.75 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

this will work with a sager 5797 correct, but what i'm wondering is since most top end laptops all have 12.7mm optical drives. would this work with most likely any of todays current gen laptops, in case i want to upgrade in the future. It says universal in the link i know but i'm just double checking, also are there any other recommendations from price point stand of view, the device claims to support 12.5mm drives and smaller even 9.5mm.

Looks slightly differant then the one I bought fom newmodeUS, but mine replaced a slot load. But the one I got was a 12.7mm. I used it with a 9.5mm 750GB drive until my 1TB 12.5mm drive came in. Works well with either and I've used newmodeUS for numerous products and they've always been outstanding. Doesn't really answer your question as to whether or not it will work in the 5797. But thats the same route I went with my M17x thats speced in my sig. Here is a few pics from when I did the conversion.

that is a 12.7mm, that was my question from the start would it work with 5797 and have no problem working in any other laptops optical drive, which commonly use 12.7mm, it supports 12.5mm and below drives, it states it's universal so i was wondering would this infact work with any current gen optical drive in a laptop.

that was my question don't most typical laptops have 12.7mm optical bays, so it being universal why wouldn't it fit correct? or are there some key missing points.

The only component I needed, was one that was in the computer. The M17x had a thin piece of metal that secured the Sata plug. But that you can just screw back on to the caddy after removing it from the optical drive. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work with yours.

I bought one of those for my Sager, but it only accomodates a 12.7mm high drive too. They basically give you screws that wedge under a tab on the sides. For the 9.5mm drives, it's loose under that tab, because the screw isn't wide enough. I know some people rigged it to work, but I couldn't get it to work without risking the drive bouncing around in it.

Newmodeus may be more expensive, but they're in America and not shipped from overseas (can take two weeks or more for one to arrive if you go with the eBay one). I would email newmodeus and ask about that specific model for your laptop. They will probably ask to send photos of your optical drive removed from your machine to confirm.

Quite true, NewmodeUS s typically good with that stuff. The caddy I got accomodated both types of drives, and allowe each to be secured with the four screws in the bottom of the HDD.
