Is an SATA drive in a notebook significantly faster than a standard PATA drive?
I was interested in buying a W3J... until the fact it only had a PATA drive caught my eye. Would it make any real difference in speed?
Thanks in advance,
RS

The connection itself does not make a differance. SATA is faster but notebook hard dirves are still well below 133mb/s which is the maximum for PATA. However the new SATA drivers are a generation ahead of the older PATA drivers. The fastest drivers are not available as PATA but only SATA, I think the maximum storage for PATA is 160gb 5400rpm and i dont expect much more to come out. A 80gb 5400rpm SATA drive wont be much different from a 80gb 5400rpm PATA driver.

There is zero real world speed difference between SATA and PATA in a notebook. In fact, SATA uses about twice as much power as PATA, so you'll get longer battery life with PATA.
And SATA-300 uses considerably more power than SATA-150. Which makes me wonder why notebook manufacturers are even offering it, since no notebook drives even come close to saturating SATA-150.
Quick question about HD connections...
