I'm looking for a extremely quiet hard drive more than 120GB. I know SSD's are silent, but right now they are too expensive for me.

I have a Hitachi 160gb, and it makes sorta like a clicking noise when seeking the hd. It it extremely annoying when I'm in my room by myself. Are there any hard drive that don't make a "clicking" like sound?

I don't think I'd buy an SSD just for word processing. But you won't find quieter.

If you want a quiet harddrive get a 160GB 5400rpm one platter drive. For example: Hitachi 5K160 or WD1600BEVT.

There are several ways to get rid of the clicking. Like HDTune, NHC, hdp.... You may want to use the search.

Get the Hitachi Feature Tool and adjust the acoustic management.

    I have an Hitachi HTS543232L9A300 320gb 5400rpm 2.5 SATA

And it is virtualy silent even when running defrag, and there are no click or any other strange noises, and i have it in a 12" notebook!

    Regards

    John.

I have Samsung Hm160HC, Hitachi 5k40, 5k160, 5k320, 7k100, 7k200, and 7k320 drives are out of them all the Samsung hm160 and the 7k320 are very quiet drives. Both of these drives have one platter which greatly reduces the operational noise in comparison to the two platter variants.
With every harddrive generation from Hitachi, each successive one becomes faster, quieter and more power efficient.

Please verify your harddrive interface before upgrading. for the ATA interface, the Samsung Hm160HC is the fastest drive you can get. The largest for the ATA interface is the WD 2500beve drive.
