    Good morning all,

    1st time poster!! :)
A friend of mine has a 4yr old R40 (dont have the exact specs in front of me).
Recently the hard drive started going out...(IC25N040ATMR04-0)40GB Travelstar
I was able to back up all the critical info to an external USB drive.
He is still using it although with a thumbdrive as his file repository

I have a couple of questions:
Can I replace it with a normal 2.5" ATA drive??
Can I move up to a 5400RPM drive w/o losing too much battery life?
What is a good brand HD in "notebook world" as well as a reputable vendor??

    thanks for all the help
    bama

The hard disk should be a 2.5" disk, and it has an IDE interface. Any ATA-6 drive should be fine, and a 5400 RPM should be fine. Newver drives consume very little power, and it shouldn't affect battery runtime either. However, before upgrading, just take the drive out and check the details/sizes compred to the 2.5" hard disks on the market, so that you can go ahead and upgrade.

Seagate and Hitachi are both very good brands, and I would consider on of them. Fujitsu drives are also quite good, but thier more quiet, than most other drives running at the same spin rate. Western Digital is also quite a a good brand.
