Hi,
I've just swapped out the Hitachi HDD out and put in the WD1600BEVS due to my OS eat up the space too much. The new drive runs fine and good performance but it make my palm HOT! Quite hotter than the Hitachi. The HD Tune tells that the temp is around mid-30 to mid-40, avg around 40c.
Wonder if I could make it cooler... stuff in more heat tx stuff? Any SW to reduce this? I'm running Vista 32 bit.
Thanks,
-
tempoct,
I've moved your thread to the Hardware Components and Aftermarket Upgrades subforum. You should receive better assistance here. -
Those temps are fine....It actually depends upon the notebook's architecture if the palm-rest is becoming hot due to the HDD..!!
You can try disabling the Indexing Service for your HDD or disable the Windows Search service....and if your HDD supports AAM, set it to low noise.. (using HD Tune) Check out the HDD's documentation, it should let you know what is the recommeded AAM value..!!
Your HDD has an operating temp range of 5* to 60*C....
You can also run a WD HDD Diagnostic.... -

The WD xx00BEVS family have fairly high power consumption as can be seen on the Tom's Hardware chart. Aside from trying to reduce HDD activity, the other alternative is to change to a HDD with lower power consumption. The Samsung HM160JI is one of the best and has very good performance because it uses one platter.

ah.... just got the WD and I don't think the computer shop will take it back. Will try the AAM

You could try putting some aluminium foil between the HDD and the palm rest. This might reduce the transfer of heat upwards but you'll need to watch the HDD temperature.

^^ Does that really help John..?? I would try that, if you truly recommend since my drive normally stays within the range of 40-45*C....
Wouldn't the aluminium foil becoming excessively hot..?? -
doesnt yours already have foil on the HD compartment?
-
Nope, just the caddy and HDD....

Shiny aluminium foil should reflect some of the heat back onto the hard disk and absorb less heat than grey or black plastic.
John -
So the heat is reflected back to the HDD, so that would increase the temp of the HDD but decrease the heat to the upper casing of the HDD compartment, right..??

It can be done. For reasons best known to Zepto the HDD in my Zepto 6024W came inside an aluminium foil sleeve.
John -
I guess I will try it out....!! So I will place an Aluminium Sheet to the base of the HDD compartment, and keep an eye on the temps....Thx for the tip..
(But will the contact between the base of the HDD [the green side] and Al foil cause any other side-effects) -

OK, I will try to make a paper sandwich, using the HDD and Al foil as the bread..
R61 runs hot after swapped HDD
