What I would like to know is, can I set up a RAID using a PCI RAID controller and then use one of the motherboards on board sata connections to hook up another hard drive that isnt connected to the RAID but still seen by the os?

Heres some details, right now we have 4 147Gb 15k hard drives set up in RAID5. I have some spare 80GB 10k hard disks that I would like to run the operating system on instead of taking up space on the raid configuration.

    Thanks

    If I am reading right,
yes you can run harddrives off of your hardware raid controller, and separately run harddrives off the motherboard.

For example, I have two SAS Hitachi Ultrastar's connected to my workstation motherboard in Raid 1. I also have a PCI-X 3ware, Ultra 320 SCSI controller, which runs two 73gb Fujitsu 15k drives in a raid 0 stripe.

I run my operating system off the raided SAS drives, and use the raided Ultra 320 scsi for additional storage.

K-Tron---Thanks for the quick reply. I figured I could do it that way. What im planning is using a 10k HDD for the OS another 10K HDD for scratch disks for video editing and then the RAID for saving the files and renders.

    How is the OCTI-Tron coming?

What he said. I figured everyone does this, RAID 5 the storage and the operating system off its own drive.

I dont know if my card can do Raid 5, I need to check.
I may do raid 5, but I know for a fact I am keeping the Operating system on its own drive, and the files on the other.

The OCTI-TRON is going well. I am getting a bit frustrated since my TYAN motherboard still did not come in. It has been like 2 weeks since purchase.

Otherwise its going well, I ordered the keyboard.
Now I just need speakers and a media card reader.

Youve actually given me some ideas on making my own desktop/laptop. If I get my promotion when I get back from the desert im going to give it a go. Ive got friends in the metal working shop so it shouldnt be to hard given all of their experience.

I will be trying out the seperate hdd and raid on monday when I get back to work and will post my findings after that.
