Hey all,
First let me thank you boys for sharing your wisdom...
My question is a simple one, I just picked up a laptop and am looking to upgrade the RAM. I am running a stock Toshiba Qosmio G20-xG6 ( link). Here are the specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium M 760 2.0gghz, Socket 479, Stepping 8
Board: Intel i915PM/GM Rev 03
Southbridge: 82801FBM (ICH6-M)
LPCIO: SMSC
Current memory is stock (not sure of brand)
Type: DDR2, Dual Channel, 1024MB
Timings:
Frequency: 266.0MHZ
FSB DRAM: 1:2
CL 4.0, tRCD 4, tRP 4, tRAS 11
The site says that the RAM upgrades can reach:
Two slots total, zero open. Slots can be filled with 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, or 1GB PC2-4200 DDR SODIMM modules, for maximum of 2048MB use; 1025MB + 1024MB.
I need two new 1024mb chips, pc2-4200, so I am wondering what would be the best bet as far as timing and quality of the ram for this laptop. Preferably found at a major retailer.
Thanks again,
Crynos

From what I could come up with, I found this deal at Futureshop (I know, I know... but look at the price). Link
It is PC5300, but SODIMM as well. Would this fit and work well with my laptop?
Thanks! -
This should fit and work it will downclock to 533Mhz. PC5300 normally has a CL5 but when downclocked should go to CL4. But I will not guarantee. NewEgg has a few dollars cheaper I believe (not same exact).

Will it downclock itself automatically? Is there anyway that I can overclock the machine to match the speed of the ram? Is that recommended?
Thanks again,
Crynos -
It will downclock automatically. Yes there is a way to increase the RAM speed. But I can do it with any RAM, you increase the FSB. It is not a "proper" way to do. It increases CPU also called software Overclocking. Many threads on it don't know anything about you setup.
-
Can anyone confirm if that RAM will downclock to the CL4? Just want to make sure that this RAM will work in the laptop before I drop $100 ordering it.
Thanks,
Crynos -
How about instead of someone confirming the wrong speed RAM will clock down. Instead I link you to a page with many name brands like Kingston, Corsair, G.Skill and many more. At the correct speed and CL4. Instead of $40 per GB $19.99 per GB? Would that not be better?

Much better my good man. Thanks!

Happy to hear you are satisfied my friend!

Hello again,
Ran into a few problems.... Namely, I can't find any matched pair PC4200 that deliver to Canada, apart from the 240 pin Corsair. I've tried looking through the Toshiba site, calling tech support, etc. and I can't find out if its 200 pin or 240 pin compatible.
Any ideas? -
You need 200 pin SODIMM, you don't need "matched" just get two of the same.
