    I think the RAM I need is the DDR2 SODIMM pc4200 533, but I wanted to make sure. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellie M40 - JM8

    Actually its not DDR2, its DDR SODIMM PC2700 333, maximum is 2 GB.

    it takes either. check your BIOS to know which you need.

    Yeah, I just check out cruical.com, it has two models of M40, one is DDR and other is DDR2. So do dumfu has suggested.

    Check with CPU-Z. If the current RAM installed is DDR then you can only use DDR and vice versa.
