    Hello,
My new xps1210 has 2x512mb RAM sticks and I want to upgrade to 2gb RAM.

The current ram is 667mhz. I figured that would probably be best, but is it?

I found the following RAM on newegg.

    1. Kingston 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) --$78.49 + shipping.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820134129

    2. G.SKILL 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5400) Notebook Memory -- $74.99+ shipping ------ Out of Stock
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231091

    3. G.SKILL 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5400) Notebook Memory --$78.99 +shipping ------ Out of Stock

    4.Transcend JetRam 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory --$73.99 + shiping

    5. G.SKILL 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory ---$73.99 + Shipping -------Out of Stock
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231069

    6. G.SKILL 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory --- $74.99 + Shipping ------ Out of Stock
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231104

    Which would be the best?

I also prefer less expensive RAM since I am a college student that already has to spend too much money on other things haha.

    Thanks for the help.

you do realize that you're going to only have 1.5G right?

Unless you're planning on buying two of the above, but I was wondering why you didn't look for 2G kits.

I plan to buy two of the same type. I'd buy 2G Kits, but after looking at prices... 2G kits are more expensive than buying two of these 1G's. Unless I can be pointed in the right direction for something better and cheaper.

Would it be a good idea to drop down to 533mhz? Although it does have a CAS Latency of 4, rather than the 667mhz's CAS 5...

There is really no performance difference in laptops from 533mhz to 667mhz.

    goodnight and good luck!

    Thanx Sirius

    Any other suggestions?

Also, if I could I'd just buy a 1x2gb Stick... but they are much too expensive.

sorry, it's late at night and this is what I meant to say...your listed memory (667mhz), and my listed memory (533mhz) will have no real difference (none will outperform the other) because of the cas latency. with that being said, you should go with whatever is cheaper.

in this case, I do believe 1G sticks separately is the cheaper case.

Thanks. Is there any difference between the ones I listed? quality, performance, usage, etc? When i bought the correct ram for my last laptop, it crapped out pretty fast... so I just want to make sure what I get is good and will work well.

well, quality-wise, g skillz and kingston both offer really good products. You should find comfort in knowing you're buying from a VERY reputable company, Newegg. They will be happy to assist you with anything that goes wrong in the future.
I have a lot of experience with newegg and they are very very good. lol

I would stay away from transcend... never really even heard of them.

I love newegg as well. I bought my Sceptre X9g-Gamer 19" 12ms monitor (with no ghosting) w/crystal clear (glossy) from them. They gave shipping free because the shipping company dropped it off a block away at the wrong house without signing for it... I only paid $300 for what was comparable to $500 monitors. This was last year btw...

Thanks for the warning on Transcend.

I am actually waiting as well. It just arrived at my parents place back at my home town. I'm off at college 75 miles away. I will probably make a trip down there tomorrow night or sunday to snag it and start testing it. I'll send you the specs on it later.

But my parents purchased the same laptop but with lesser specs and they like it. They say its tiny, but the screen is gorgeous. But you are likely to have your hands on yours before I get mine on mine. ^_^

    update for you

    from another forum:

Timings are measured in clock cycles. At 533MHz you are waiting 4 cycles, at 667 you are waiting 5. In terms of how long that actually takes:
533MHz is roughly 1.8ns per cycle
667MHz is roughly 1.5ns per cycle

    4 cycles @ 533MHz = ~7.2ns
    5 cycles @ 667MHz = ~7.5ns

So, the 533 will respond faster

I'm worried too.. 12.1" is sooooo tiny... especially when I am used to a 19" monitor. But I expect the glossy screen to be great. After having this Sceptre monitor, I couldn't imagine a non-glossy screen.

EDIT: Thanks for the timing info

well, I was more referring to the hardware aspect of the screens and not so much the physical size itself. I'm sure the 12 inch screen will be fine with me.

It's just that a lot of people complain about the screens. mostly the toshiba screens. I hope this doesn't scare you.

a lot of people report bad light bleeding, horrible viewing angles, bad colors, and such from the toshiba monitors. Supposedly AUO makes the best.

    btw no problem.

My parents didn't mention anything along those lines in regards to their M1210... however my dad said the screen looked great, so I assume no dead pixels. However, since he prefers his desktop over anything I doubt he tested the screen out much for bleeding light or for single dead pixels.

The Transcend JetRAM sticks have dropped in price again. I just put two in our Gateway MX8711 and they run great.
