I own a Dell Inspiron 6400/1505 with 1Gb of RAM, but I want to upgrade it ti 2Gb. Will doing so void my 3-year warranty ?

Not unless it's the cause of the problem.

it would be good to keep the stock ram. You can easily buy the same or better make and model from non-dell outlets.

keep the stock sticks in case you might have to send in your laptop to repair. Though I haven heard of anyone who had warranty voided by Dell tho.

I just had my lcd replace on-site and he did not even bother to find out whether i did any alteration to the stock hardware. I upgraded my vostro to 4gb ram from 2gb.

Dell won't deny you a warranty claim if you have upgraded the memory yourself. They might only if you damage your laptop, e.g. with static electricity or similar while upgrading your RAM recklessly, and they find out it was due to your reckless or uncareful installation of the RAM. You'd have to admit you did that though.

I have the E1505, and trust me it only supports a maximum of 2gb of memory.
If you buy 4gb of memory, the bios will only see 2Gb of the memory I have tried, but to no avail I cannot get more than 2gb to show in my system.

Adding memory does not void the warranty.
Simply flip the laptop over, and unscrew the two screws on the slightly elevated memory bay located in the center of teh system. Then pop the cover off, and install the memory cards.
The E1505 supports PC4200 and PC5300 memory cards, there is no point in getting PC6400, as it is not supported by the system.
